The easiest way to travel to the Great South Run

Runners and spectators can use a special Park & Ride service from Portsmouth International Port to travel to the Great South Run on Sunday 23 October.

Portsmouth City Council are running the special event service from the multi-storey car park at Portsmouth International Port with buses running every five minutes from 7am - 9am taking runners and spectators directly to Clarence Pier - a short walk from the start line.  Return buses will be waiting to depart from Clarence Pier from 12.15pm and will run until 3.27pm.

At just £4 per vehicle with up to eight passengers, it is an easy and cheap way to travel to the race.  Drivers will need to pay on exit by cash or card, unfortunately Park & Ride smartcards cannot be accepted on this special event service.

The regular Portsmouth Park & Ride will still be operating every 15 minutes for shoppers, visitors and spectators travelling to the city centre and The Hard.  This will run from the earlier time of 7am, but buses leaving the Park & Ride site between 9am and approximately 3pm will only travel as far as the city centre (using stand F at Commercial Road South bus stop) due to event road closures.  Normal Park & Ride bus services from The Hard will resume when the roads reopen at approximately 3pm. Please note, the last bus leaves The Hard at 6.20pm and the city centre at 6.25pm.

Park & Ride could be particularly attractive for Great South Run entrants as there will be disruption to train services that weekend while improvement work is being done in Fareham.

Cllr Jim Fleming, cabinet member for Traffic & Transportation at Portsmouth City Council, said: "We are looking forward to hosting the 26thGreat South Run in Portsmouth next weekend and welcoming thousands of runners and spectators to the city.  Please note that traffic will be very busy on the Sunday and we recommend using public transport or our special Park & Ride service from The Hard if travelling to the event.  Good luck to all runners!"

Please be aware there will be a number of road restrictions and closures over the weekend to make way for the Great South Run events. Please check Traffic Regulation Order number 72 at for information on road closures and restrictions that will be in place.

If travelling through The Hard interchange, please be aware that the site is currently under construction and a temporary interchange is in operation. Please allow more time for connections and use the area safely as it is likely to be busy.

Bus services will also be affected over the weekend so please check with individual operators for revised timetables.
